Pallet Racking System Guide for UAE Warehouses
A pallet racking system is the backbone of most warehouses in Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and all over the UAE. Chosen well, it can double the number of pallets you store in the same floor area and make every pallet reachable by forklift. Chosen badly, it wastes space, slows picking and can become a safety risk. This guide explains how warehouse racking systems work, which options suit which business, and what to check before you buy.
What Is a Pallet Racking System?
Pallet racking is a steel storage structure made of two main parts: upright frames (the vertical columns joined by bracing) and beams (the horizontal members that hold the pallets). Beams hook into slots on the uprights and lock with safety pins, so levels can be moved up or down when your products change. Each opening between two frames is called a bay, and each place a pallet sits is a pallet position.
Because the system is bolted and slotted rather than welded, it can be extended, re-arranged or moved to a new warehouse later. That flexibility is one reason pallet racking is the most widely used racking system in UAE logistics and trading companies.
Main Types of Pallet Racking
Selective pallet racking
Selective racking is the standard layout: one pallet deep from each side of the aisle. Every pallet can be reached directly without moving another one, which makes it ideal for businesses with many different products (SKUs) and first-in, first-out stock rotation, such as food trading, FMCG and 3PL warehouses.
Double deep racking
Double deep racking places two pallets one behind the other. You gain storage density and need fewer aisles, but you need a reach truck with extending forks, and the front pallet must be moved to reach the back one. It suits companies that hold several pallets of the same product.
High bay pallet racking
Many newer warehouses in Jebel Ali, Dubai Industrial City and the Sharjah industrial areas have clear heights of 10 metres or more. High bay racking uses taller frames and more levels to use that height, often combined with column guards, end barriers and anti-collapse mesh.
Pallet racking with decking
Open beams are fine for full pallets, but if you store cartons, sacks or loose items, the levels need a deck. The two common choices are steel wire mesh decking and GI drop over panels. Mesh lets sprinkler water and light through; GI panels give a solid, level surface.
How to Plan Pallet Racking for Your Warehouse
A good racking layout starts with facts, not with a catalogue. Before we draw a layout we collect the following:
- Clear height to the lowest obstruction: roof beams, lights, sprinkler heads or AC ducts.
- Floor area and column positions, including doors, loading bays and fire exits.
- Pallet size. In the UAE the most common sizes are 1200 × 1000 mm and the Euro pallet, 1200 × 800 mm.
- Heaviest pallet weight and how many pallets go on each level.
- Forklift type and its lift height. A counterbalance forklift usually needs a wider aisle than a reach truck.
- Number of products and how fast they move, which decides selective or double deep.
Load Capacity: Getting It Right
Each beam pair has a safe working load per level, and each frame has a total load it can carry, which goes down as the gap between the floor and the first beam goes up. A professional supplier checks both, not only the beam. Ask for the load per level in writing and display a load sign at the end of each run so forklift drivers can see the limit.
| What you store | Typical choice |
|---|---|
| Full pallets, many SKUs | Selective pallet racking, open beams |
| Cartons and sacks on the upper levels | Pallet racking with steel mesh decking |
| Loose or small stock on the levels | Pallet racking with GI drop over panels |
| Many pallets of the same product | Double deep pallet racking |
| Tight budget, fast delivery | Used pallet racking, inspected |
New or Used Pallet Racking?
New racking gives you exact frame heights and beam lengths, fresh paint and a full choice of colours. Used pallet racking costs less and is often available immediately, which helps when a new tenant must move in quickly. The key is inspection: used frames must be straight, with no bent bracing, cracked welds or crushed base plates. We grade used stock before sale and install it to the same standard as new.
Safety Accessories Worth Adding
- Column guards protect the front uprights from forklift impact.
- End-of-aisle barriers protect the end frames where forklifts turn.
- Row spacers keep back-to-back runs straight and stable.
- Pallet support bars help with pallets that are weak or a non-standard size.
- Load signs show the safe load per level and per bay.
Pallet Racking Price in Dubai and Sharjah
The price of a racking system depends on the number of pallet positions, frame height, beam length, load per level, decking and whether the racks are new or used. Installation, delivery distance and safety accessories also affect the total. Because every warehouse is different, the fastest way to an accurate figure is a free site visit: we measure, draw the layout and send a clear, itemised quote.
Common Pallet Racking Mistakes to Avoid
- Planning without the forklift: the aisle width and top beam height must match the truck you actually use, not the one you plan to buy one day.
- Ignoring the sprinklers and lights: the top pallet must stay below the clearance the fire system needs.
- No floor anchors: every frame should be fixed to the floor. Free-standing racks move when hit.
- Overloading the first level: it is tempting to put the heaviest pallets wherever there is space. Keep them low and within the load sign.
- Mixing systems: beams and frames from different brands rarely lock correctly.
Why UAE Companies Choose Metalraking
Metalraking is a racking system supplier based in Sharjah, serving warehouses across Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and all over the UAE. We handle the full project in-house: site visit, layout drawing, supply of new or used racks, delivery and installation by our own team. That means one point of contact, one price and racks that are installed straight, level and ready to load.
Warehouse Racking for Pallets: Choosing the Right Setup
Warehouse racking for pallets is planned around three numbers: pallet size, pallet weight and the lift height of your forklift. From these we choose frame depth, beam length and the number of levels. For rack storage in a warehouse with heavy goods such as tiles, cement products or drums, we use heavy duty pallet racks with stronger uprights and beams, and floor anchors on every frame.
| Load per pallet | Typical choice |
|---|---|
| Light to medium cartons | Standard selective pallet racking |
| Heavy goods and building materials | Heavy duty pallet racks with heavier beams |
| Mixed pallets and loose stock | Pallet racking with GI drop over panels or mesh decks |
